ReplaceKit

Bulk find and replace online

Replace many words at once: paste your text, paste a list of pairs (one find -> replace per line, up to 500), check the matches for each pair, then press Replace all. Free, no sign-up. Your text never leaves this page: the tool runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.

Separators: ->, =>, a tab (paste two columns from a spreadsheet) or a comma (CSV, quotes allowed). A line with no separator deletes that text.

Matching

Order

Single pass lets you swap words (cat -> dog and dog -> cat). Where two finds start at the same spot, the longer one wins.

3. Preview: matches per pair

In Google Docs: ReplaceKit Pro runs a saved pairs list in one click, with formatting kept. Get told when it is live.

How the pairs list works

You writeIt means
colour -> color or colour => colorFind colour, replace with color. One space on each side of the arrow is ignored.
colour⇥color (a tab)The same, with spaces kept exactly. Copy two columns from Google Sheets or Excel and paste them.
"Smith, J.",J. SmithCSV: the first unquoted comma splits find from replace; quote a find that contains a comma.
DRAFTNo separator: every DRAFT is removed.
(\d+)-(\d+) -> $2-$1With Regular expressions ticked: 12-34 becomes 34-12. $& is the whole match, $<name> a named group, $$ a dollar sign.
, -> \nEach comma and space becomes a new line (untick the \n box to search for a backslash-n).

Up to 500 pairs per run. Empty finds and broken regular expressions are flagged in the preview and skipped; the other pairs still run. Regular expressions are JavaScript's, so lookbehind and named groups work; ^ and $ match at each line.

In order or single pass?

In order (the default) runs the first pair over the whole text, then the second pair over that result, and so on, the way you would do it by hand in a word processor. Use it when one fix builds on another, for example -> to collapse spaces before you fix punctuation.

Single pass walks the text once and replaces each spot with the first pair that matches there, so a replacement is never changed again by a later pair. Use it to swap two words, or when a replacement contains another find (US -> United States next to States -> states).

Keep the case of each match

With Keep the case of each match ticked (and Match case off), one lowercase pair fixes every spelling of a word: colour -> color turns colour into color, Colour at the start of a sentence into Color and COLOUR in a heading into COLOR. Words in mixed case (cOlOur) get the replacement as you typed it. With regular expressions the $1 groups are filled in first, then the case is applied. The preview shows each match's own result before you replace.

Is my text private?

Yes. The tool is one script, tool.js (readable, no libraries), which works only on what is in the boxes. It makes no network requests and stores nothing; Download builds the file in your browser. Separately, the page sends one cookie-free page view count when it loads (the page address and the referring site, never your text; see privacy).

In Google Docs: ReplaceKit Pro runs a saved pairs list in one click

Copying a document out and back loses its headings, bold and links, and Google Docs' own Find and replace takes one word at a time. ReplaceKit, the Google Docs add-on we are building, does it inside the document: the free version has find and replace with match case, whole word, regex with $1 groups, line breaks, selection only, headers, footers and footnotes, with a preview of each match. ReplaceKit Pro ($6/month) adds bulk replace: paste the same pairs list (the same separators as this tool, up to 500 pairs; the Use these pairs in ReplaceKit button copies it) and run it on the document in one click, formatting kept.

ReplaceKit is built and in testing. It is not in the Google Workspace Marketplace yet, and Pro is not on sale yet. Leave your email and we send one message when you can install it.

You're on the list. We'll email you when ReplaceKit is ready.

Free version: every single find and replace, no click limit or trial clock.
