What each case does
| Case | What changes |
|---|---|
| UPPERCASE | Every letter becomes a capital: "quarterly report" becomes "QUARTERLY REPORT". Letters such as the German sharp s follow Unicode rules ("straße" becomes "STRASSE"). |
| lowercase | Every letter becomes small. Tick "Keep words that are already ALL CAPS" to leave NASA or B2B as they are. |
| Title Case | The first letter of every word is a capital and the rest is small. With the option on, short words such as a, an, the, and, of, to and in stay lower case unless they open or close a line, and hyphenated words keep them too ("state-of-the-art plan" becomes "State-of-the-Art Plan"). Style guides differ on which words count as small; this is one common list, not a specific guide. |
| Sentence case | The first letter after a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or line break is a capital; everything else is small. A lone "i" and "i'm", "i'll", "i'd", "i've" become "I". Names and places are not detected, so "paris" stays "paris": fix those by hand. |
| aLtErNaTiNg | Letters take turns in small and capital, counting letters only. The first letter is small. |
| iNVERT | Capitals become small and small letters become capitals. |
Only the case of letters changes. Spaces, digits, punctuation and line breaks stay as they are. Accented letters and non-Latin alphabets (Greek, Cyrillic) are converted too; scripts without case, such as Chinese or Hebrew, are left unchanged.
Change case without a tool
Google Docs has this built in: select the text and choose Format > Text > Capitalization, then lowercase, UPPERCASE or Title Case. In Google Sheets use the functions UPPER(), LOWER() and PROPER(). Docs has no Sentence case; this tool does.
Is my text private?
Yes. The tool is one readable script, tool.js (no libraries), which works only on what is in the box. It makes no network requests and stores nothing; you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working. Separately, the page sends one cookie-free page view count when it loads (the page address and the referring site, never your text; see privacy).
In Google Docs: ReplaceKit finds and replaces inside the document
Copying text out of a document and back loses its headings, bold and links. ReplaceKit, the Google Docs add-on we are building, finds and replaces in place, only in your selection if you want, with formatting kept and a preview of each match. The same cleanups are on the remove line breaks tool and the remove extra spaces tool.
ReplaceKit is built and in testing. It is not in the Google Workspace Marketplace yet. Leave your email and we send one message when you can install it.
Free version: every find and replace, no click limit or trial clock.
