What counts as a special character

Here, a special character is anything that is not a letter, a number or a space. That covers punctuation such as ! ? , . ;, symbols such as $ % & # @ *, brackets, quotes, arrows, stars and emoji. The tool removes all of them, then gives back the rest.

Option	What changes
Keep numbers	On: `Room 12` stays. Off: it becomes `Room` .
Keep spaces and tabs	Off joins the words together: `Hello world` becomes `Helloworld`.
Keep line breaks	Off turns many lines into one line.
Also keep these marks	Type the marks you want to survive. Keep `.` and `@` to protect email addresses, or `-` to protect phone numbers.
Accented letters	Turns `café` into `cafe`. Handy for file names, URLs and databases.
English letters only	Keeps A to Z and a to z. Other alphabets, such as Greek or Chinese, are removed too.

Remove special characters without a tool

In Google Sheets, use =REGEXREPLACE(A1,"[^\p{L}\p{N} ]",""). It keeps letters, numbers and spaces and drops the rest. In Notepad++ or VS Code, turn on regular expressions, find [^\w\s] and replace it with nothing. This page is for when you just want to paste, click and copy.

Is my text private?

Yes. The tool is one readable script, tool.js (no libraries), which works only on what is in the box. It makes no network requests and stores nothing; you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working. Separately, the page sends one cookie-free page view count when it loads (the page address and the referring site, never your text; see privacy).
