How the counts work
| Count | How it is made |
|---|---|
| Characters | Every letter, number, space, punctuation mark and line break. An emoji counts as one. |
| Without spaces | The same, but spaces, tabs and line breaks are left out. |
| Words | Groups of characters split by spaces or line breaks. |
| Lines | Pieces split by a line break. A blank line counts as a line. |
| Paragraphs | Blocks split by at least one blank line. |
Example: Hello world is 11 characters, 10 without spaces and 2 words.
Count characters without a tool
In Google Docs, press Ctrl+Shift+C (Cmd+Shift+C on Mac) for the word and character count. In Google Sheets, =LEN(A1) gives the characters in a cell. This page is for when you want every number at once and the limits next to it.
Is my text private?
Yes. The tool is one readable script, tool.js (no libraries), which works only on what is in the box. It makes no network requests and stores nothing. Separately, the page sends one cookie-free page view count when it loads (the page address and the referring site, never your text).
