How the words are counted
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| A word | A run of letters or digits. don't and well-known each count as one word. Punctuation is dropped. |
| Case | By default The and the are the same word. Tick Match case to split them. |
| Share | Times the word appears divided by all counted words. |
| Common words | A short fixed list of 50 or so English words. It only applies when you tick the box. |
| Ties | Words with the same count are listed A to Z. |
Example: the cat and the dog has 5 words and 4 different words. the appears 2 times, a share of 40%.
Count words without a tool
In Google Sheets, =COUNTIF(A:A,"cat") counts one word you already know. To count every word you need a list of words first, and that is what this page does in one step. In Google Docs, Ctrl+Shift+C gives the total only.
Is my text private?
Yes. The tool is one readable script, tool.js (no libraries), which works only on what is in the box. It makes no network requests and stores nothing. Separately, the page sends one cookie-free page view count when it loads (the page address and the referring site, never your text).
