Compare two texts
Paste two versions. See what changed, line by line or word by word. Free, no sign-up. Your text never leaves this page: the tool runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.

Differences
Red lines (or words) are only in text 1. Green ones are only in text 2. Grey is the same in both.
You're on the list. We'll email you once.
How the comparison works
The tool lines the two texts up and finds the longest run they share. Whatever is left over is the difference. In lines mode a changed line shows once in red (old) and once in green (new). In words mode only the changed words are marked, so one edited word in a long sentence stands out.
| Option | What changes |
|---|---|
| Lines | Good for lists, code, CSV rows and addresses. Each line is one unit. |
| Words | Good for letters, contracts and articles. Each word is one unit. |
| Ignore upper and lower case | Apple and apple count as the same. |
| Ignore extra spaces | a b and a b count as the same, and spaces at the start or end of a line are skipped. |
Example: The meeting is on Monday against The meeting is on Tuesday in words mode marks only Monday and Tuesday.
Compare two texts without a tool
In Google Docs, open Tools > Compare documents to compare two files you own. In Google Sheets, =EXACT(A1,B1) says whether two cells are the same. In a terminal, diff old.txt new.txt does the same job as this page. This page is for when you just want to paste two blocks and look.
Is my text private?
Yes. The tool is one readable script, tool.js (no libraries), which works only on what is in the boxes. It makes no network requests and stores nothing; you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working. Separately, the page sends one cookie-free page view count when it loads (the page address and the referring site, never your text; see privacy).
In Google Docs: ReplaceKit finds and replaces inside the document
Copying text out of a document and back loses its headings, bold and links. ReplaceKit, the Google Docs add-on we are building, finds and replaces in place, only in your selection if you want, with formatting kept and a preview of each match. Related tools: the remove duplicate lines tool, the remove extra spaces tool and the bulk find and replace tool.
ReplaceKit is built and in testing. It is not in the Google Workspace Marketplace yet. Leave your email and we send one message when you can install it.
Free version: every find and replace, no click limit or trial clock.
